As much as being in a relationship can be wonderful, being single can be just as great (no, really).
Now when Valentines Day comes around, it really is up to you to decide just how you interpret the one day in the year where people have more mixed emotions about these 24 hours than what toppings they want in their Chipotle bowl.
Traditionally, I used to dread the day, for it’s a day to remind you just how alone you are and how you have more of a connection with an avocado then you have ever had with anyone else #realrelationshipgoals.
But for the first time, I have a different perspective on this supposed holiday and being single overall. I mean, I really am following the “New Year, New You” mantra (Yes, I’m one of those people). I refuse to dread the day, simply because my life lacks the “romance” factor. Why the word even has that big of an impact on people’s lives, I’m not sure. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, we are never going to get A Walk to Remember romance status, regardless of how much we pine for it every year.
I’m not a cynical on love, but a realist. Love is some tough shit and whether you’re with someone or not, you really do have to spend time being independent owning it and embracing it all.
So if you’re a single finding yourself depressed, hating everything about today, and finding yourself at this current point…
put that tub of Froyo down, take out The Notebook dvd, get your shit together and realize how great it is to actually be single!
Reason #1: You can save some cash
Valentine’s Day may be a day to be all cute with your significant other, but it can take a toll on your wallet. From buying food to cheesy gifts, the dollar bills are soon running away from your wallet before you can realize just how much you have spent. Being single means you don’t have to deal with any of that and can have money to go buy yourself something. Plus you can remain stress-free about whether they’ll like that extravagant gift that could collect dust on their dresser.
Reason #2: About that dessert sale…
Stores aim to sell so many chocolates and sweet treats for the special day, that it’s impossible to have all of it dissipate once the holiday is over. The real reason, is because single people can take full advantage of half-off chocolate sales. If anyone judges you for buying three boxes, you tell them your spirit animal, Forest Gump, always asks if you want a box of chocolate and for once you’re going to proudly say yes.
Reason #3: You can figure out who you are
Being single can be one of the best times in your life, because it’s the only time you can take the time to truly figure yourself out. You’re able to learn more about yourself than just what kind of topping you like on your pizza. Grow into your own as a person and embrace it. It’s exciting to look in the mirror and introduce yourself to someone that you are finally able to learn more about. Quit focusing on finding someone and enjoy your own company. At the end of the day, we all only have ourselves to count on.
Reason #4: You have more time for yourself
Just because you’re single, doesn’t mean that you’re lonely. If you want to go see a movie, go buy a ticket, large popcorn and enjoy! If you want to go out with your girls then go! If you want to just stay in and binge watch New Girl, go for it! This is YOUR time and you have the power to do whatever you want, without having to worry about always involving another person, let alone dress up and shave (I mean, am I right?)
Reason #5: Time for friends
When you’re in a relationship, it can be easy to become so enraptured with them that you tend to forget to make time with the people who were always there and continue to be there, even after that idiot leaves your life. Being single, means you finally have the time to focus solely on your friends and enjoying each other’s companies.
Reason #6: Your life becomes spontaneous
I’ve always been an adventurous person and love nothing more than to just able to get in my car and spontaneously go somewhere. The best part about being single is that you don’t have to deal with the exhaustion of worrying about scheduling it with someone else. You go be Julia Roberts and Eat, Pray, Love.
Reason #7: Drama-free
It’s so rewarding to not have the stress and drama that can come with a relationship, whether it’s petty fights, bickering or them not understanding how you they’ll never compare to the love you have for Leonardo DiCaprio. Kick back and relax and watch the drama unfold on your fave reality show.
